Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI)

This scheme qualifies you to run climbing sessions on top-roped and bouldering walls in any climbing wall in the UK.

Prerequisite

In order to join a training course you will need to be over 17 years of age and already be a “climber”. But don’t worry, you don’t need to be hardcore. You need to be a competent roped climber (can put on a harness, tie-in and belay) having visited at least 3 separate climbing walls over a total of at least 15 sessions and have led at least 10 routes of grade 4 or above.

Registering for the Training

As we run the courses on behalf of Mountain Training you will need to Register for the CWI Scheme via their website and provide us with your registration number.

Training Course

The training is over 2 day and is mostly practical with a few classroom based sessions. The instructor will be extremely experienced and well qualified. Quality is assured from our resident provider (Jack Griffiths) and Mountain Training. A full syllabus is available in the CWI Handbook but loosely the course will cover:

  • Personal climbing skills (top-rope and lead climbing)
  • Equipment inspections
  • The climbing wall environment (etiquette and regulations)
  • Warming up for groups
  • Managing groups on top-rope
  • Managing groups in bouldering areas
  • Choosing appropriate climbing games
  • Delivery of basic climbing techniques
  • Hazard avoidance

Once the training is completed you will be given feedback on how to prepare for your assessment.

Consolidation Period

In order to prepare for your assessment you will need to put what you have learnt into practice. The minimum requirement is to spend a few months (6 is recommended) shadowing at least 15 sessions at 2 different climbing walls in order to prepare for taking groups on your own in the future. This is the minimum and would suit someone who already has a lot of climbing and group management experience. Those newer to the industry may feel they need more than this in order to be ready to go solo. Finally you will need to have a valid first aid certificate at assessment.

Assessment

Assessments are around 6 hours over 1 day and are usually a mix of mock peer to peer instruction, specific skills / knowledge demonstration sessions and instructing a “live group” in order to demonstrate competency.

Results could be a fail (very unusual), defer (where you just need to work on a specific area and come back to demonstrate it next time) or a pass (where you demonstrate full understanding and application of the syllabus).

Once you have passed you will be signed off by Mountain Training and will be qualified to run indoor climbing sessions. This may be just the start of your journey with further qualifications for coaching and lead climbing and beyond to follow.

Climbing Wall Development Instructor (CWDI)

This scheme qualifies you to run Lead Climbing session in any climbing wall in the UK and follows on from the CWI qualification.
